What Are Cardboard Boxes?

In everyday language, "cardboard box" is a catch-all term for any box made from thick paper-based material. In the packaging industry, cardboard technically refers to a few distinct materials: paperboard (a thick, single-layer paper stock used for cereal boxes and folding cartons), chipboard (a lower-cost recycled paperboard), and corrugated fiberboard (the fluted, multi-layer material used for shipping boxes). When most people search for "cardboard boxes," they're usually looking for corrugated shipping boxes.

Cardboard vs. Corrugated: What's the Difference?

The distinction matters when you're ordering packaging. True cardboard (paperboard) is a single-layer material typically 0.010" to 0.030" thick. It's used for lightweight packaging like cereal boxes, shoe boxes, and cosmetics packaging. Types of Cardboard Packaging

Folding Cartons

Lightweight paperboard boxes that ship flat and fold into shape at the point of use. These are the boxes you see on retail shelves — cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and consumer electronics typically use folding cartons with printed graphics and coatings.

Rigid Boxes (Setup Boxes)

Thick, non-collapsible boxes often used for premium products like smartphones, jewelry, spirits, and luxury goods. Rigid boxes are more expensive but create a high-end unboxing experience.

Corrugated Cardboard Boxes

Sustainability Considerations

Cardboard and corrugated packaging are among the most recyclable packaging materials available. In the US, the corrugated recovery rate exceeds 90%, making it one of the highest recycling rates of any packaging material. When evaluating suppliers, look for FSC or SFI certifications, high post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, water-based inks and adhesives, and lightweight designs that reduce material usage.
